EUROPEAN DIRECTIVE 2006/42/EC QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
(from a SAPEM internal training course)

Q.
What is the European Directive 2006/42/EC ?
A.
A legal requirement for all countries in the European Community
The purpose of which is the safety and health of individuals
Which defines the basic safety requirements for machinery
Which is explicitly applicable to lifting (appendix I.4)

Q.
What are these basic requirements ?
A.
To design and build machines so that they securely ensure their functions
To take into account improper uses that can be reasonably foreseen
    To eliminate or reduce risks
To take the necessary protection measures vis-à-vis the risks that cannot be eliminated
To inform the users (instructions, training) of the residual risks, including those related to
      improper use

Q.
Isn’t it enough to meet the standards ?
A.
No - Directive 2006/42/EC goes beyond that
In the SAPEM professions each case is special
The standards cannot take into account all cases, especially those concerning improper use.
They define the minimum requirements, which are not necessarily sufficient
Meeting the “harmonized” standards (European standards) only gives a presumption of conformity to the Directive 2006/42/EC

Q.
What is SAPEM’s approach to meet the Directive 2006/42/EC ?
A.
Working in close relation with the customers to thoroughly analyse the problems
Using its experience which is very important for determining the risks, notably those related to incorrect use of products
Incorporating the notion of risk at the design stage
    Controlling production and quality
Providing information about the product to ensure safe use

Q.
How does the Directive affects our way of working ?
A.
In many important ways – Directive 2006/42/EC :
Makes the company liable when we write the “CE” statement of conformity
Makes each one of us responsible
Forces us to be close to our customers so that together we can improve safety
Forces us to be extremely rigorous
Forces us to continuously make improvements
